2013 Sea Otter Classic Dual Slalom

One of the most historic and significant races in the country, the Sea Otter Classic hosted at Mazda's Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, CA delivers on every aspect of a happening bike festival. Nearly every type and discipline of cycling is represented including: various forms of mountain biking, road cycling, and cyclocross. It's also one of the few places that the average cycling consumer can check out prototypes and mingle with the world's top professionals all in a low-key, yet exciting environment.

I started off winter training with one goal in mind: making the podium again, but this time in Cat 1 30-39. An early season back injury unfortunately put that goal in jeopardy just 60 days before the event.

Practice and Qualifying on Thursday went well, and I was feeling good (not great). I qualified 10th out of 20, so I made it to the race on Friday. Then race time came, and in the very first round re-aggravated my back injury. Despite nearly beating my competitor in the first race of round one, I knew the second run would be even tougher as the pain set in. I made two key mistakes in the second run, and my day was over. Overall finish was a respectable 10th.

I still had an amazing time at the event visiting sponsors and vendors, plus watching some of the DH and road events before eventually heading to the hospital with severe back and leg pain.

One of the best experiences of the event was seeing an up-and-coming Cat 2 DH racer from our team experience the event for the first time. Wide-eyed, Zach Miller and his parents clearly had a amazing time experiencing everything Sea Otter is about. A celebration of all things cycling.

I would like to thank my sponsors for their continued support, as they truly believe in supporting grassroots riders like me.
